Key takeaways
  • Tankless (hookah) systems win on bottom time, travel and running cost for dives shallower than ~20 m.
  • Scuba tanks win on depth range, mobility and independence from the surface.
  • Both require training, a buddy and adherence to no-decompression limits.

The short answer

If most of your diving happens in the top 12 metres — reefs, hull work, spearfishing where it's legal, photography — a battery-powered surface-supply system gives you more time underwater for less money and far less logistics. If you want to roam freely, dive beyond 30 m or swim long distances from your entry point, a scuba tank remains the right tool.

How each system works

A scuba diver carries compressed air at around 200 bar on their back. A hookah diver breathes air compressed on demand by a floating surface unit and delivered down a hose. With WOLACH, that compressor is oil-free and battery-powered, so there's no exhaust and no fuel.

Bottom time & depth

A standard 12-litre tank lasts roughly 45–60 minutes at 10 m for a relaxed diver. A WOLACH S6-10H supplies air for up to ten hours. The trade-off is depth: WOLACH systems are rated from 8 m (S6) to 29 m (S77).

Safety differences

On scuba, your gas supply is finite but entirely yours. On hookah, it's effectively unlimited but depends on the surface unit and hose. That's why we recommend every hookah diver carries a small spare-air cylinder and a dive computer.

Legal note. Many regions prohibit spearfishing with any breathing apparatus, including hookah. Check local regulations before you hunt.

Who should choose which

  • Choose tankless if you dive shallow, often, near a boat or shore, or travel to dive.
  • Choose scuba if you dive deep, drift long distances or need full independence.
  • Choose both if you're a serious diver — many owners keep a tank for deep days and a WOLACH for everything else.

FAQ

Do I need a diving certification?
Yes. These are surface-supplied breathing systems for certified divers (Open Water or equivalent). Always dive with a buddy, a dive computer and within no-decompression limits.
How deep can I go?
S6 is rated to 8 m, S7 to 12 m, S9 to 20 m and S77 to 29 m. Always dive to the rated depth, never the laboratory-tested figure.
What happens if the battery runs low?
The unit sounds a low-battery alarm and the display shows remaining charge. Plan to start your ascent with at least 25% remaining, and carry a spare-air cylinder.
